A few days ago, I saw a post that had an Egyptian meme with the caption "World Sleep Day" and I was confused about whether that was something real or just another meme someone has brought to life, so I went ahead and looked it up only to find that it was indeed a real thing!

World Sleep Day is observed annually on the Friday before the March Equinox and this year, it falls on Friday the 17th of March. The first World Sleep Day was held on 14 March 2008 which makes this year its 14th anniversary!

The idea of having an annual event for sleep was founded and brought to existence by the World Sleep Society, with the intention of celebrating sleep and raising awareness on issues that are related to sleep.

It is organized by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Sleep Society and aims to lessen the burden of sleep problems on society through better prevention and management of sleep disorders.

The day aims to reduce the burden of sleep disorders on society by promoting better prevention and management. World Sleep Society celebrates the day by throwing various activities that involve discussions, presentations of educational materials, and exhibitions whether online or in physical spaces where people can physically engage with it.

Every year they have a different theme for it, and this year's theme is "Sleep is Essential for Health". It aims to emphasize how healthy eating and exercise are essential to good health and how good sleep is essential to one's physical, mental, and social well-being.

I personally struggle a lot with sleep, I'm what people nowadays describe as "a night owl" and my sleeping pattern is nowhere to be patterned at all. I'm most productive during the night time, that is when I get all my creative energy and thoughts start pouring on me.

I have tried and am still trying to keep a good track when it comes to sleep, I tried meditating, some military tricks for fast sleep, changed my mattress a few times in hopes of bettering the quality of sleep, and even kept track of how many hours of sleep I get on a daily basis to help me visualize things in a more vivid sense. I noticed when I went to bed early and had a good uninterrupted sleep and then woke up early in the morning, I was more productive the next day than had I used up that productivity boost I got from staying up longer at night.

With everything that has been going on in the world recently and the distractions of social media, so many of us struggle with keeping a consistent healthy sleep schedule even though we all know that sleep is one of the most fundamental physiological needs of human beings. The importance of sleep cannot be overstated since it is an essential necessity for both physical and mental health.

If you struggle with sleep issues know that it is okay to ask for help, or if you are not okay with that, here is a more comprehensive article that talks more in detail about how to get better sleep...

With all that is said, sleep well everyone!
